Dr. Laura A. Detre graduated with a BA in History from Hiram College and has an MA and a PhD in Canadian history from the University of Maine. Her dissertation focused on propaganda produced by the Canadian government between 1896 and 1930, aimed at encouraging immigration from the United States and Great Britain to the Prairies. Her current research focuses on race and ethnicity in Austrian film between 1934 and 1960 and on the memoirs of Austrian Jewish filmmakers who fled the rise of Nazism. She has taught as an adjunct instructor of history at several colleges and universities since earning her PhD.

Laura has also served as an adult leader with both the Girl Scouts and Scouts BSA. She is also a volunteer with Art Goes to School, an organization focused on art appreciation and has worked with students in WCASD elementary schools, presenting materials to art classes. She is married and has two children who attend WCASD schools.

Dr. Laura Detre was elected to the School Board in November 2021 for a four-year term. She serves on the Education and Pupil Services Committees and is the chair of the Policy Review Committee.
