West Chester Area School District Names New Assistant Superintendent and Director of Teaching and Learning and Equity

The West Chester Area School District (WCASD) announces the official appointment of two distinguished educational leaders following their approval by the School Board at its meeting held on April 24, 2024. Dr. James Conley and Mrs. Shante' Knight are set to join the WCASD leadership team, bringing with them a wealth of experience and expertise that will further elevate the district's commitment to excellence in education.

The Director of Teaching and Learning and Equity role, which Mrs. Knight will assume, effectively addresses the vacancies left by the unfilled Director of Teaching and Learning and Director of Equity positions. Additionally, the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools, Dr. James Conley, now assumes the responsibilities previously held by Dr. Kalia Reynolds as she transitions to her new role as Deputy Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer at the conclusion of the school year.

James ConleyDr. James Conley joins WCASD as the incoming Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education. With over 25 years of experience in education, including serving as the Assistant Superintendent at Wallingford-Swarthmore School District, Dr. Conley is a seasoned leader known for his dedication to academic performance and innovation in secondary education. In his most recent role, Dr. Conley played a pivotal role in the development of the school's strategic plan. Prior to his role as Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Conley served as the principal at Unionville-Chadds Ford High School for seven years.

In his new role, Dr. Conley will work closely with middle and high school principals as well as athletic directors to drive educational excellence and student success. His proven track record of leadership and strategic planning will be instrumental in advancing WCASD's secondary education initiatives.

Dr. Conley’s first-hand experiences at the middle and high school level and as an educational leader will be invaluable as we continue raising academic excellence across the district,” said Superintendent, Dr. David Christopher.

“We look forward to the fresh perspective and innovative ideas Dr. Conley will bring to our team as we collaboratively work to foster belonging and support our students, staff, and community,” he added.

Dr. Conley will begin his five-year contract with WCASD on July 1, 2024. Over the summer, he will engage with staff and the community to prepare for a seamless transition into the new school year.

Shante' KnightMrs. Shante' Knight will assume the role of Director of Teaching and Learning and Equity at WCASD. With over twenty-four years of experience in education, Mrs. Knight brings a wealth of expertise in school transformation and curriculum development. Mrs. Knight’s relevant experience includes positions as the Director of Educator Leadership Development at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), and as the Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction for Williamsburg James City County Schools in Virginia. In these roles, Mrs. Knight has led comprehensive curriculum planning and professional learning initiatives to enhance leadership and learning in education. Her deep understanding of curriculum and equity issues positions her as an invaluable asset to WCASD as the district continues to prioritize equity in education.

Mrs. Knight is a transformative educational leader with an impressive track record of spearheading innovative curriculum initiatives, implementing professional development focused on inclusivity, and championing student success,” said School Board President, Karen Fleming. “Her collaborative leadership style and ability to build bridges between the classroom and community will be instrumental as we work to ensure all of our students receive a world-class education and school experience,” added Fleming.

Mrs. Knight's anticipated start date at WCASD is on or before July 1, 2024. She will work closely with district leadership to familiarize herself with current curriculum initiatives and equity work as the district charts its path forward.
