WCASD Named 2018 Best Communities for Music Education
West Chester Area School District has been honored with the 2018 Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.
The distinction is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
“I am fortunate to work with so many talented music educators who share their passion for music with thousands of students every day,” said Dr. Kristen Barnello, Supervisor of Fine Arts and Social Studies. “Music is such an important part of our district community, and our programs continue to grow each year. This award is a direct reflection of the countless hours that our teachers invest in their students and the commitment that we as a district have made to cultivate the artistic expression of our students.”
Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music.
“West Chester Area School District has a long history of excellence in music education,” said Kendra Werner, choral director at East High School. “Our elementary music teachers lay the foundation for young musicians to be interested in and excited about the world of music. Our middle school teachers help students to channel their talents in particular areas. Our high school teachers reap the benefits of years of music education and help their students to reach new heights, not only at the district level but also often at the regional or even state level. We are all fortunate to have tremendous support from the staff and administrators within our schools, as well as the community at large.”
West Chester Area School District supports numerous performing ensembles in instrumental band, string orchestra, and chorus at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Over 4,800 students are involved in district's music program. There are seven district-wide "honors" ensembles for which students audition, rehearse, and perform at all three levels.
