This past winter, the 10th Anniversary of the WC E-Poetry Contest once again captivated participants with an impressive display of creativity and talent. Under the expert guidance and dedication of Ms. Eileen Hutchinson, Chairman, the contest continued its traditions including the kindergarten (Word Play) category, along with additions of Art, Music, and technology enhancing the contest's multidisciplinary approach.

This year saw a record number of submissions from high school students, with some of the strongest art and music entries in the contest's history. Participants explored a wide range of themes, demonstrating thoughtful use of literary devices, artistic technique, and personal voice. A panel of judges, including published authors, retired educators, and West Chester Writing Project (WCWP) fellows praised students for their originality and craftsmanship.

Despite challenges, the contest has continued to thrive thanks to unwavering commitment and creativity. Over the years, almost $12,000 in scholarships has been awarded with $9,000 for writing, $2,200 for art, and $500 for music.

Founder and Chairman Eileen Hutchinson has her sights set on growth, with plans to broaden the contest’s creative reach. “Looking ahead, I’m excited to expand the contest even further with the addition of a Spoken Word and Monologue category, including a scholarship opportunity for a theater camp,” said Hutchinson. “The ultimate goal is to represent every facet of the fine arts in this unique creative competition.”

Guest Speaker Dana at EPoetry Awards Speaks to Crowd

The annual Poetry Awards Celebration, held during National Poetry Month, at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Exton, was a highlight of the contest. The second-floor children’s center was filled with enthusiastic teachers, principals, families, and winning contestants. Live poetry readings, award presentations, art displays, and singing and composition performances on a full keyboard piano dazzled those in attendance, especially the kindergarteners’ dynamic readings kicking off the K-5 ceremony. The grand prize winners were awarded scholarships worth nearly $2,000 for music, art, and writing programs, along with journals, certificates, and bookmarks.

Author and National Writing Fellow, Mrs. Dana Kramaroff, was a featured guest at the celebration, where she shared her bits of wisdom for keeping a journal and fun poetry tips to spread love and kindness.

On behalf of the WC E-Poetry Committee, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, sponsors, and teachers who promote poetry in their writing workshop. This year’s sponsors included West Chester Area School District (WCASD), West Chester Writing Project, Chester County Art Association, Young Rembrandts of Chester County, Conoco Gas Stations along with Taylor’s Music Store & Studios for their funding of six program scholarships to the grand prize winner in each category. Special appreciation goes to artistic director, Ms. Allison Garber for designing the new bookmarks and award certificates, and to WCASD administrators Dr. Sara Missett, Dr. Kalia Reynolds, and Mrs. Kara Bailey for their support with writing scholarships and awards.
