Gifted Program
The West Chester Area School District offers gifted support services for students in elementary, middle, and high school who are identified as eligible for gifted education.
Students who are identified as gifted receive learning opportunities designed to support their areas of strengths. Services are individualized and determined by a Gifted Individualized Education Plan (GIEP) team, which includes school staff and parents/guardians. Not all gifted students receive the same supports; services are based on each student’s unique learning profile.
Students may be considered for gifted services at any point during their school experience. Parents/guardians and teachers may request that a student be considered for gifted identification. The process begins with gathering information about the student, which may include classroom performance, teacher input, observations, and student work. The school team reviews this information to determine whether further evaluation is appropriate. When needed, additional testing is completed by the school psychologist.
If a student is identified as needing gifted support, a GIEP is developed collaboratively by the school team and the family. The GIEP outlines learning goals and describes how the student’s needs will be supported throughout the school day.
Gifted support may be provided in different ways, including:
- Enrichment and differentiated instruction within the classroom
- Enrichment and support from a gifted support teacher
- Collaboration with other school staff, as appropriate
The district is committed to supporting gifted learners through flexible, responsive programming that values collaboration with families and focuses on meeting the needs of the whole child.
