Families of Current 5th Grade Students
We are excited to welcome your child to middle school next year! This transition brings important academic and developmental changes, and our teachers and administrators are committed to supporting students every step of the way.
Core Academic Placement: All sixth-grade students participate daily in a core academic program, which includes: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Middle school core academic courses are offered at multiple instructional levels to ensure each student is appropriately supported and challenged. Placement decisions are based on a portfolio of assessment data, including—but not limited to—students’ diagnostic benchmark data (IXL), standards-based grades, and teacher observation. Fifth and sixth grade teachers work closely together to determine the best learning environment for each student, and placements are continually monitored and adjusted as needed. Families will receive a letter from their building principal in mid-February identifying their child’s recommended course placement.
Sixth-Grade Courses & Music Selection: In addition to core academics, students rotate through Unified Arts on a 6-day cycle. All students participate in the same Unified Arts courses, with one exception—music. Sixth-grade students will choose one music option: Chorus, Band, Orchestra, or Classroom Music. Students will learn about each option during their current music classes. Before schedules can be created, families must submit a music selection for their child. Families are to complete the sixth-grade music selection form between February 3 and February 13, 2026.
