Middle School Schedule Development

Why We’re Exploring This Work

Middle school is a pivotal time in a student’s journey. It’s where independence grows, confidence is built, and learning begins to take on new depth and meaning.

As we continue to focus on providing the best possible student experience, we are exploring how our middle school schedule can better support:

  • Deeper, more engaging learning
  • Strong relationships between students and teachers
  • Timely support when students need it
  • A balanced and developmentally appropriate school day

Our goal is not simply to change a schedule, but to ensure that the structure of the day truly supports how students learn and grow.

Our Process So Far

Over the past year, a cross-district committee of teachers, administrators, and staff has been engaged in thoughtful research and collaboration around this work.

This has included:

  • Studying a range of middle school scheduling models
  • Visiting and learning from other schools and districts
  • Reflecting on our current schedule and identifying opportunities for growth
  • Discussing the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students
  • What Makes a Great Middle School Master Schedule

Through this process, several potential approaches have been explored. Each comes with strengths and challenges, and we are working to finalize the best option for our middle school communities.

What We’re Aiming to Improve

Across all of the options considered, there are several consistent goals guiding this work.

Supporting Stronger Learning Experiences

Longer and more flexible learning blocks give teachers time to incorporate meaningful discussion, collaboration, and student-teacher interaction.

Expanding Student Support

Building in dedicated time for intervention, enrichment, and extra help to support a wide range of student needs, including academic and social-emotional growth.

Improving the Student Experience

Reducing unnecessary transitions throughout the day that allow for a more balanced and manageable daily pace.

Enhancing Teacher Collaboration & Planning

Providing consistent time and structures that support thoughtful planning and collaboration.

What’s Next

We are now beginning to share this work more broadly with our school teams and communities.

In the coming weeks:

  • Our staff will engage in discussions and provide feedback
  • Families will have opportunities to learn more and ask questions
  • Input will help refine our thinking before recommendations are brought forward

We are committed to a thoughtful process that includes the voices of our community.
