High School Schedule Recommendation
The West Chester Area School District is excited to introduce a recommended high school schedule designed to enhance student learning, provide greater flexibility, and improve engagement. After an extensive review process involving administrators, teachers, students, and stakeholders, the district is moving toward a Drop 2 Rotating Schedule for the 2026-2027 school year.
This schedule aims to provide:
- Balanced instructional time to maximize learning opportunities.
- Consistent movement and timing throughout the school day.
- Flexibility for arrival, dismissal, and extracurricular activities.
- Fair access to support resources during the school day.
- Longer instructional periods to promote deeper, more engaged learning.
Schedule Key Features
- Drop 2 Rotation: Students will attend six out of eight possible classes each day, allowing for variety while maintaining consistency.
- Longer Instructional Periods: Fewer transitions and extended class times will enhance student focus and allow for more in-depth learning.
- Lunch & Learn: A structured midday break provides dedicated time for academic support, enrichment, and student collaboration.
- Improved Flexibility: The new structure accommodates students in specialized programs (e.g., TCHS, Allied Health, and Child Development) while ensuring better scheduling for AP science labs and other unique coursework.
- Enhanced Teacher Collaboration: The schedule allows time for teachers to work together, strengthening instructional practices and student support.
Next Steps
In preparation for the 2026-2027 implementation, WCASD is taking the following actions:
- Professional Development: Training for staff on maximizing student engagement and deeper learning strategies.
- Communication Plan: Informing students, families, and staff about the new schedule through presentations, FAQs, and other outreach efforts.
- Student Accountability Systems: Implementing platforms to track and support student engagement during instructional time.
- Ongoing Data Collection: Monitoring the impact of the schedule through quantitative and qualitative research during the first year of implementation.
