Elementary Departmentalization
Engaging Our Learners
As part of our commitment to enhancing student learning, the West Chester Area School District will transition to a departmentalization model for 4th and 5th grade beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. This means students will have different teachers for different subjects, similar to the structure they will experience in middle school.
This change will first be introduced at Fern Hill, East Goshen, and Starkweather as a pilot program. If the pilot proves successful, we plan to expand this model districtwide in the 2026–2027 school year.
Why Are We Making This Change?
We believe this shift will create a more engaging and effective learning experience for students. Research and careful consideration have highlighted several key benefits:
