AI in Education
A Student‑Centered Approach
In the West Chester Area School District, we are taking a thoughtful, student‑centered approach to understanding and integrating artificial intelligence into our schools. WCASD’s approach to AI aligns with our Portrait of a Graduate and the priorities outlined in our Comprehensive Plan, ensuring that this work supports our broader vision for student success.
AI is explored thoughtfully as part of our commitment to preparing students with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions they will need for the future, while keeping instruction grounded in strong teaching, student development, and meaningful learning experiences. Decisions at every level are guided by student safety, privacy, development, and instructional value, with the goal of helping students think critically, act ethically, and navigate a world where AI exists.
Guiding Principles
Artificial intelligence is evolving quickly, and questions about its role in schools are understandable. In WCASD, our approach to AI is guided by a few clear principles that shape every decision we make.
- Students Come First: AI is explored when it supports learning in meaningful ways and has the potential to enhance instruction. It is never a replacement for teaching, thinking, creativity, or human judgment. Our goal is to help students develop critical thinking, ethical decision‑making, and strong foundational skills that transfer beyond any single tool.
- Student Safety, Privacy, and Appropriate Use: All district‑approved AI tools are FERPA‑ and COPPA‑compliant and covered by district data privacy agreements. Tools are reviewed for safety, privacy, and age‑appropriate use. Students do not create personal accounts, and AI is used only in teacher‑guided instructional settings.
- Building AI Understanding and Literacy: WCASD believes AI literacy is part of modern digital literacy. We are actively reviewing and updating our digital literacy curriculum to include age‑appropriate learning about AI, using trusted resources such as Common Sense Media.
- Intentional Exploration, Not Automatic Adoption: Research on AI in education is still emerging. WCASD does not assume AI improves learning by default. Tools are piloted carefully, feedback is gathered from classrooms, and decisions are revisited as research and experience evolve.
- Preparing Students for Their Future: WCASD’s approach to artificial intelligence aligns with our Portrait of a Graduate and our commitment to preparing students for future success. Thoughtful exploration of AI supports the development of skills and mindsets such as critical thinking, ethical decision‑making, adaptability, and responsible citizenship. AI is approached as one of many tools that can support this broader vision of student success.

Our Journey with AI: Past and Present
2022–2024 | Building Understanding and Guardrails
- Focused on staff learning, policy development, and limited exploration
- Established expectations for student safety, data privacy, and responsible use
- Began developing guidance around AI literacy and ethical use
2024-2026 | Limited, Guided Exploration
- Continued work through small, teacher‑guided pilots and professional learning
- Introduced student AI literacy and safe‑use instruction
- Explored how AI may support instruction in developmentally appropriate ways
AI tools currently being explored: Magic School, SchoolAI, and Snorkl
All tools under exploration are FERPA‑ and COPPA‑compliant, covered by data privacy agreements, and used only in teacher‑guided instructional settings. Exploration does not indicate district‑wide adoption, and any decision to formally adopt a tool beyond a pilot would be communicated with parents.
