AI in Education
Technology with Purpose
As a district, we're taking a thoughtful, student-centered approach to understanding and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into our schools. As this technology rapidly evolves, we’re focused on ensuring that any tools we explore are aligned with our educational values and support student success.
Why We've Been Exploring AI
Today’s students are growing up in a world where AI is becoming more present in the tools and systems around them. As educators, we must ask:
-
How can AI responsibly enhance teaching and learning?
-
What does AI literacy look like for our students?
-
How can we model ethical, equitable use of these technologies?
Our mission is to prepare students for the future, not just as users of AI, but as thoughtful, informed adults who understand and can question the technologies that impact their lives.
Our Process
We use a thoughtful, multi-step process to evaluate any artificial intelligence tools before they are used in our schools. Our approach prioritizes student privacy, instructional value, and responsible implementation.
- Initial Review: Each tool begins with a review of its Terms of Service and Privacy Policies to ensure it meets data protection standards for both students and staff.
- Instructional Evaluation: If privacy requirements are met, the tool is evaluated by Curriculum Supervisors and Instructional Technology Coordinators to determine its educational value, alignment with learning goals, and cost-effectiveness.
- Pilot Testing: Tools that show promise are piloted in a small number of classrooms to better understand how they function in real instructional settings.
- Wider Adoption: Successful pilots may lead to broader implementation as approved instructional tools, with continued monitoring and support.
AI Milestones
During the 2024–2025 school year, WCASD took intentional steps to build a responsible foundation for AI in education, including:
- Professional learning for staff
- Clear, Board-approved guidance
- Student AI literacy and safe use
- Thoughtful introduction of instructional tools
- Collaboration with education partners
This work continues as we thoughtfully explore how AI can support teaching, learning, and operations while keeping students at the center.
What Are Some Ways Students Might Use AI
When implemented responsibly, AI tools can:
- Generate First Drafts
- Research and Develop Support for Claims
- Comprehend Text or Concepts
- Gain Knowledge and Prepare for Discussions
- Edit and Revise Written Work
- Understand, Analyze and Question Documents
- Organize and Enhance Thinking, Rather than Replacing Thinking
As always, our primary focus is ensuring safe, supportive learning environments where all students can thrive.
