AI in Education
Technology with Purpose
As a district, we're taking a thoughtful, student-centered approach to understanding and integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into our schools. As this technology rapidly evolves, we’re focused on ensuring that any tools we explore are aligned with our educational values and support student success.
Why We've Been Exploring AI
Today’s students are growing up in a world where AI is becoming more present in the tools and systems around them. As educators, we must ask:
-
How can AI responsibly enhance teaching and learning?
-
What does AI literacy look like for our students?
-
How can we model ethical, equitable use of these technologies?
Our mission is to prepare students for the future, not just as users of AI, but as thoughtful, informed adults who understand and can question the technologies that impact their lives.
Our Process
Our approach has been cautious and collaborative. We're listening to educators, reviewing research, evaluating tools, and considering the ethical, academic, and developmental implications of AI use in our schools. Below is a short overview the steps we've taken in this process:
November 2022
ChatGPT launched and we began receiving questions and concerns from teachers.
February 2023
The district convened a “Think Tank” of teachers, administrators and school board members with a direct focus on learning and the impact of AI on our students and staff.
Summer 2023
We researched appropriate tools that provided students with experience with AI but continued to encourage them to develop their research and critical thinking skills. We also met with teacher leaders to provide learning and training.
2023-24 School Year
We conducted small scale pilots of the Perplexity AI tool in classrooms at the secondary level in different courses. This required professional learning for teachers and was a collaborative effort.
Summer 2024
We provided learning sessions for administrators, developed policy and modules.
Perplexity AI and WCASD
Through our process, we decided that Perplexity AI would be the best fit for WCASD. Perplexity is a research-based tool designed to help students ask questions, find credible information, and build understanding through guided inquiry.
Perplexity is not just a chatbot; it is a search companion that includes citations and encourages students to think critically about sources, facts, and how information is presented. Teachers using Perplexity with students are doing so in structured, supervised ways that align with classroom goals.
Our goal is to help students develop research and reasoning skills—not just to get quick answers, but to ask better questions and explore ideas with curiosity and care.
What Are Some Ways Students Might Use AI
When implemented responsibly, AI tools can:
- Generate First Drafts
- Research and Develop Support for Claims
- Comprehend Text or Concepts
- Gain Knowledge and Prepare for Discussions
- Edit and Revise Written Work
- Understand, Analyze and Question Documents
- Organize and Enhance Thinking, Rather than Replacing Thinking
As always, our primary focus is ensuring safe, supportive learning environments where all students can thrive.
