Early Intervention Program

Welcome to the West Chester Area School District!

We look forward to partnering with you and your child to make the start of their school journey as smooth as possible.

If your child has been receiving support through the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) Early Intervention (EI) Program and has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), this page will guide you through the process of moving from early intervention services to school-age special education within WCASD.

Student Transition Process

Step 1: Before the Transition Meeting

CCIU will contact you to request your consent to share your child’s records with WCASD.
You’ll then schedule a transition meeting with the district, which will take place between November and March
A meeting is needed if:
- Your child is "age of beginner and required to attend a school-age program.
- Your child will be 5 years old on or before September 1 and you plan to register for kindergarten.
- You’re unsure whether your child should begin kindergarten or remain in Early Intervention for another year.

Step 2: During the Transition Meeting

You’ll be asked to sign an Intent to Register form indicating whether you intend to register with the WCASD.
The WCASD team will share information about how to register your child for Kindergarten and transition their IEP to school-age services.
The WCASD team will learn more about your child’s strengths, needs, and school readiness.
Please note: this is not an IEP meeting—it’s simply an information-sharing opportunity to help plan next steps.

Step 3: After the Meeting

The WCASD Transition Team will share your child’s information with your neighborhood school team, which can include:
- The Principal
- School Psychologist
- Special Education Teacher
- Related Service Providers (i.e. Speech, OT, PT)
After reviewing your child’s documents, the school team will contact you to develop the Kindergarten IEP.
