Music students in the district’s
five secondary schools had the unique opportunity recently
to
hear a performance by the Shanghai Traditional Instrument
Orchestra based in Shanghai, China.
Founded in 1952 as the
first orchestra of its kind in China, this group of 80
very talented musicans has toured throughout
the world, including many European countries, Australia,
New Zealand, and Japan. In their current tour of the United
States, they are sharing traditional Chinese music in concert
halls and schools.
Performing in the East High
School auditorium, the Chinese musicians first demonstrated
their traditional
instruments – panpipes,
Jing Hu, pipa, Er Hu, Zheng and flute. They then performed
many of their country’s folk tunes.
After the concert,
members of the East High School Student Council and
Orchestra hosted a reception during which
students had the opportunity to discuss differences
in culture,
music, and instruments.
The musicians were enroute from
Philadelphia to Lancaster when they made the stopover at
East for the concert,
which was arranged by District Supervisor of Music
Dr. Robert
Palladino.
