The West Chester Area School District Moves Forward on the Next Phase of its School Facilities Program
Focus Turns to Elementary Schools in District’s Facilities Planning
May 20, 2008 (West Chester, PA) - - The West Chester Area School District announced today that they have begun planning for the renovation of district elementary schools and have prepared a schedule for community and staff input as well as School Board decision-making. The renovations are necessary in order to address aged systems, which include electrical, mechanical and plumbing. The plan must also support student enrollment and changes in the elementary education program. Many elementary schools in the district were built 50 years ago and were last renovated nearly 20 years ago.
This represents the next phase in a current and ongoing district-wide program to maintain the public’s investment in our schools, to provide the learning environments students in the district need and citizens of our community expect. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Alan G. Elko, said, “While earlier phases of our school facilities plan have focused on the high schools and middle schools, we must now concentrate our resources on the much-needed work at our elementary schools.”
The School Board recognizes that it is critical to collect needed facts and figures prior to moving the elementary school facilities plan into the public realm. To that point, the President of the Board, Rogers W. Vaughn, stated, “The Board is currently being advised in executive session regarding real estate issues as part of the data collection phase. We want to provide our staff, parents, and community a chance to provide input into our planning, and the attached calendar outlines the expected timing of those opportunities for all who are interested.” The School Board believes it is important for the community to know about and participate in the process that will allow the district to complete its goal of creating physical environments that maximize the teaching and learning experience.
The West Chester Area School District has engaged KCB Architects, a Philadelphia-area firm known for its flexibility and creativity in school facilities planning.
