Delaware Valley Science Council Recognizes Students
Three district high school students have been chosen as finalists in the annual Delaware Valley Science Council competition to identify, encourage, and recognize talented college-bound youth who have outstanding capabilities in the areas of science, mathematics, and engineering.
In order to be eligible for awards, top students from over 400 high schools in Southeastern Pennsylvania compete by completing two written examinations in the fall of their senior year. The students choose to be tested in two of four topics: biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. High scorers from these examinations are interviewed by teams of local scientists and engineers where they are judged not only on their expertise, but also on poise, communication skills, and well-roundedness.
All finalists are invited to an awards dinner held in March where cash awards are presented to 50 students in three areas: (1) Science Council Awards, (2) Professional Society Awards, and (3) Specific Directed Awards.
Congratulations to Henderson High School students Jarey Wang and Ben Bellis, and East High School student Robert Grande for being selected as finalists in this year’s competition.
UPDATE:
At the Delaware Valley Science Council annual awards dinner held on March 10, 2008, Rob Grande and Ben Bellis were each awarded $250 and the opportunity of a summer internship from Exelon. Jarey Wang received $300 for achieving the highest score on the math exam. All three received a plaque and a flash drive from the Delaware Valley Science Council.
