2008-09 Proposed Final Budget Available for Public Inspection

The 2008-09 proposed final budget for the West Chester Area School District was adopted on Monday, April 28, 2008. Totaling $191.7 million, the proposed final budget represents a 2.7% increase in expenditures over the current year. The final proposed real estate tax rate for Chester County is set at 16.85 mills, or a 6.7% increase over the current year. The final proposed real estate tax rate for Delaware County is set at 12.94 mills, or a 9.0% increase over the current year.

In 2006 the Pennsylvania Legislators established property tax relief - funded by gambling revenues - in order to reduce school districts’ tax burden on their local residents. The relief, which will help to offset federal and state mandates funded by school districts through local real estate taxes, is expected to be applied to the 2008-09 tax bills. In essence, every qualified homestead/farmstead in our District will get a credit of approximately $100 on their 2008-09 tax bill. The average Chester County homeowner with an assessed value of $189,950, therefore, will have a net tax increase in the amount of $101 (3.2%) rather than the $201 (6.7%) increase without the tax relief. The average Delaware County homeowner with an assessed value of $285,000 will experience a tax increase of $205 (5.6%) rather than a $305 (9.0%) increase over last year.

The Board is scheduled to adopt the final budget on Tuesday, May 27, 2008
