June 17, 2008 – (West Chester, PA) – The West Chester Area School District announced today that Marc Bertrando, Ed.D., has been appointed to fill the position of Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools effective July 1, 2008. The School Board voted 7-0 in favor of the appointment, with two members not able to attend the special board meeting held Monday. Both of those members expressed their complete support for Dr. Bertrando in this important appointment.
Currently the principal at West Chester B. Reed Henderson High School, Dr. Bertrando is not only a successful and highly-regarded administrator, but he has been a teacher in the system and held the position of vice-president of the teachers association. He spent two years teaching at the junior high school level in the Brandywine School District in Delaware from 1991 – 1993. Dr. Bertrando also enjoyed the role of coach and student advisor during his time as a teacher. He and his family live in the district, and of his three children, ages nine, seven, and one, two attend elementary school here.
“I am inspired by the opportunity to serve our school district in this new capacity,” Dr. Bertrando stated. “As a resident, a parent, and an employee, I have a vested interest in the success of this organization as it meets the complex needs of all of our secondary students. Although our district is facing significant leadership changes, I believe that we can create the collective capacity to continue our proud traditions while embracing innovation and change.”
Dr. Bertrando earned the degree of Doctor of Education earlier this year at Immaculata University, while his Bachelor and Masters degrees came from Pennsylvania State University in 1991 and 2000 respectively.
Secondary education in the WCASD includes three high schools and three middle schools, and totals nearly 7,000 students.
The West Chester Area School District is responsible for the education of 11,700 students and encompasses 75 square miles covering townships in both Chester and Delaware Counties.
