Athletic Strategic
Plan
With a third high school scheduled to open
in September of 2006, the West Chester Area School District
believes that
a long-range strategic plan for the interscholastic athletic
program is needed to ensure consistency in the purpose and
direction of this program across schools.
Accordingly, in
October 2003, the West Chester Area School Board developed
a pupil services goal to complete a district High School Athletic Plan. An
Athletic Strategic Planning Committee was then formed. The committee, which
includes high school and central office administrators, School Board members,
community members, coaches and high school athletes, completed the initial
portions of the Athletic Strategic Plan last winter. A stated mission, objectives,
program tactics, and strengths and weaknesses of the current program were
all part of an initial report to the School Board in February.
Since then, Action Teams have been working
on developing Action Steps for the six program tactics. The
committee anticipates
completing this work and
finalizing
the plan by the fall of 2005.
Central to the plan, as stated in the mission,
is the belief that the interscholastic athletic program
is an essential component of the educational experience.
The athletic plan also includes the overall district mission of having
every child
achieve his personal best and become a contributing citizen. In addition,
the athletic plan stresses the need for students to pursue competitive
excellence and to be contributing team members.
West Chester is the first
school district in Chester County to recognize the need
to develop a long-range strategy for this important part
of
its educational
program. When completed, it will become part of the district’s
overall Strategic Plan, which also includes components on the building
level.
